I use the word “affordable” in a relative sense as each of us has our own threshold of affordability coupled with beauty being in the eye of the beholder. That said I would say the Pelikan M1000 is one of my best grail pens alongside Montblanc 149 and Namiki Emperor. Others may disagree. But of these 3 it is the least expensive, matched with outstanding quality and an exceptional writing experience. The wetness, feedback, modest flexibility of the nib and overall quality and feel of this pen in your hand make the M1000 an outstanding choice. If you have the funds I would strongly recommend purchasing one.
This big boy is a BEAUTY. Wrote perfectly upon arrival, and despite its size, it's super comfortable for long writing sessions (even for small hands like mine). The nib feels very unique--distinct from, but easily stands toe-to-toe with, many of the other flagship pens out there (KOP, 149, etc.) My experience is similar to the other reviewers here: my EF writes like a medium.
Appelboom's service is amazing. I selected the option to have their nib specialist check the nib, and even with the check, this somehow arrived in California four days after I ordered it. Highly recommend both the M1000 and Appelboom.
The Pelikan M1000 with an EF nib is a beautifully crafted large pen that sits comfortably in the hand and offers a delightfully smooth piston mechanism. The oversized, bouncy nib delivers a unique and enjoyable writing experience, setting it apart from other brands. My only disappointment is the shift from transparent ink window stripes to opaque ones—still elegant, but missing that classic Pelikan design.
After owning all the "heavy hitters" from Pilot, Lamy, Visconti, I was still in search of a pen that suits larger hands well, without sacrificing comfort and elegance. The Pelikan M1000 perfectly fits this need. The nib (mine's ) is exceptionally wet and smooth, and the size, for my hands, is perfect - not too big in length or circumference. Mine came with slightly misaligned tines, but nothing that couldn't be fixed with a brief press with a fingernail against a book. Appelboom was fast, friendly, and helpful!
Ultimately, the M1000 is well deserving of its reputation. Anyone with large hands looking for a wet, bouncy, smooth nib to elevate their writing experience will undoubtedly find a winner in the M1000.
The availability of the BB nib for the pen is a great opportunity for me. I have long admired the M1000 model and appreciate the opportunity to acquire it with the desired nib.
I was very happy with how the M1000 (EF) writes! I knew ahead of time a few items, 1) a VERY wet nib, 2) no longer transparent, 3) large & weighty. While I would love the transparency to still be available, it is still a great writer. The delivery to the U.S. was very fast, with the only slow-down due to USPS, not DHL.
Mina has an EF nib, which is super wet and writes more like a chunky medium.
What I liked about this pen:
+ Large, but still comortable
+ The nib is super wet, the feed keeps up well, it's great for ligher inks, which can be unreadable in more moderate pens
+ Nice build quality
What I didn't like:
- Some time ago they changed formula for barrel material and it's not transparent anymore
- The nib is pretty bouncy and thus it has a slight misalignment
Nothing beats the King Pelikan. M1000 leads the way and matches the Mont Blanc 149, Sailor King of Pens and the Namiki Yukari Royale. The nib, aesthetics of the pen, the flow, the wetness of the EF nib, all are out of the world.
Having recently gotten an M800 (EF) from Appelboom with tune and smooth that was a totally delightful writer right out of the gate, this M1000 (EF), also tuned, is not nearly as smooth, has less line variation, and is just a letdown. I expected much better from a flagship pen.
