Hadrian was one of history’s most powerful and respected rulers. As one of the ‘five good emperors’ he reigned during an epoch viewed by chroniclers as the happiest of the ancient period. Starting in 117 A.D., Hadrian ruled for 21 years over an empire spanning three continents. Hadrian ended his predecessors’ expansion politics, stabilised the provinces and became a great emperor of peace and prosperity. His legacy was immense, since Hadrian invested in infrastructure and the arts in all parts of his enormous realm. It wasn’t only Rome and Athens that had him to thank for new buildings and comprehensive restorations, but many other cities of his empire as well. Ludwig II (25 August 1845 – 13 June 1886), called the Swan King or the Fairy Tale King, was King of Bavaria from 1864 until his death in 1886. He exercised his penchant for elaborate castles by building three architectural masterpieces: Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee and Neuschwanstein, the fanciful vision of a medieval fortress. The swan became his royal emblem, which is symbolically elevated by the Lohengrin Saga and immortalised as a design motif throughout Ludwig's castles. Moctezuma I was crowned ruler of the great Aztec Empire in 1440, thereby ushering in the golden age of the Aztecs. During his reign, he shaped the image of the Aztec state that we are familiar with today – a state rich in culture and mythology. The capital city Tenochtitlán, today’s Mexico City, blossomed under his rule. The Montblanc Patron of Art Homage to Moctezuma I Limited Edition 4810 with champagne-tone gold-coated fittings is dedicated to this supreme ruler of one of the most special cultures in world history. The overall design is inspired by an atlatl, an Aztec spear-throwing device. The shape of the cone, refined with a hammer finish, is based on an Aztec sacrificial knife with an obsidian blade. The lacquer colours - petrol and carmine red - are inspired by the colours of the royal cloak. Two hieroglyphs decorating the cap are symbolizing the years of Moctezuma I's reign. The handcrafted Au 750 solid gold nib is adorned with a fine engraving inspired of the Aztec glyph for the city of Tenochtitlán: a three-armed cactus with a royal diadem and two scrolls. Moctezuma I (1397-1469), who ruled the Aztecs from 1440 to 1469, is best known for his expansion of the empire and for his construction projects, including the embankment over Lake Texcoco and the temple to the god Huitzilopochtli. He stated that war was the Aztec's primary task in ensuring a steady supply of casualties to the Templo Mayor, the temple of the sun, Huitzilopochtli, which claimed many casualties each year. Moctezuma's way of conquering an enemy and claiming tribute became the norm for all future Aztec conquests. Moctezuma I, also known as Motecuhzoma Ilhuicamina ("the lonely one who shoots an arrow into the sky") was the grandson of the first leader of Tenochtitlan ("Cactus Rock"). The major city-state of the Aztecs, Tenochtitlan was the major city-state of the Aztecs. It was located on an island in Lake Texcoco in the valley of Mexico. Tenochtitlan was the predecessor of Mexico City, the capital of modern Mexico. In 1440, Moctezuma was chosen to take over the reins. Unlike the previous leaders, who had the title "Speaker", he was called "Great Speaker" because he spoke not only to the Aztecs, but also to the tribes that honored him. The coronation of Moctezuma was an elaborate ceremony involving the sacrifice of many prisoners. Seated on a basketwork throne, Hungry Coyote, lord of Texcoco, placed the crown of fire, a turquoise diadem, on the head of his friend Moctezuma. Among the greatest achievements of the Aztecs, Moctezuma I and Nezahualcoyotl of Texcoco organized the construction and completion of a double aqueduct piping system, which supplied the city of Tenochtitlan with fresh water. Moctezuma expanded the borders of the Aztec empire beyond the Valley of Mexico to the Gulf coast, subjugating the Huastec and Totonac peoples, giving them access to exotic goods such as cocoa, rubber, cotton, fruit, feathers, and shells. On this tribute pen Parton of Art Moctezuma 888 we find a number of symbols of this great ruler. The Montblanc symbol, in pearl mour, is embedded in a sunstone. Moctezuma's victories are carved in this stone. The shape of the pen is based on an Altatl. A spear thrower. The spear was placed in it to give it more speed when throwing, so that a greater distance was achieved. The pen is made in turquoise lacquer with a pattern that refers to themantle of Moctezuma. The colors of the pen Red and Blue are the colors of Moctezuma. On the cap are symbols of war symbols and a skull (laquer inlays). At that time you wore these symbols on your mantle. The more symbols you wore on your clothes, the higher you were in the hierarchy. The 4 lines represent the 4 cardinal directions that radiated out from the Templo Mayor, the large temple, Huitzilopochtli. The pattern as reminiscence to the stairs up the temple. The stairs had 100 steps. The top ring of the extended cap and the top of the clip refer to the Aztek crown and jewelery. The clip represents the spear. On the sides it is decorated as a reference to the feathers. In the tip an inlay in jade. In the Aztec times, jade was more expensive than gold. The cone in special hammered pattern shows the sacrificial knife used in the Templo Mayor. This knife was made from obsidian. The ink bottles of Montblanc are available in our webstore. The Montblanc Patron of Art 2017 is dedicated to Scipione Borghese (1577-1633). Borghese was an Italian Cardinal and considered to be one of the greatest and most influential lovers, patrons and collectors of Roman baroque art. During his lifetime, Carindal Scipione Borghese was seen as an especially adept patron of culture. He was particularly fond of two young artists, both of whom went on to achieve great fame: the sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini and the painter Caravaggio. Borghese commissioned Gian Lorenzo Bernini to create numerous sculptures, including two portrait busts of the cardinal himself. Carviaggo likewise a protégé of Borghese at the time, took completely new paths in painting. His combination of sacred motifs depicted with everyday scenes was an innovation that was to shape the art of painting for centuries. The works of Bernini and Caravaggio formed the initial inventory for the Galleria Borghese, which was founded by Scipione Borghese himself. With confident feeling for milestones in art, he enriched his collection with masterpieces from Titian, Raphael and other significant artists of the Renaissance. Most famous worldwide is the Borghese Vase. Richly decorated with sculptural embellishments, Borghese displayed it on the gallery’s ground floor, and today it is one of the highlights of the Louvre. The overall design and shape of the Montblanc Scipione Borghese 888 Limited Edition is inspired by the interior design of antique-coloured marble and various marble sculptures in the Villa Borghese. The 888 Edition is a unique blend of Roman interior decoration and Roman Baroque style. The antique dark-green marble colour stands for the Ottoman Baroque style that dominates the interior decoration of Villa Borghese. The red gold coin represents wealth and nobility, featuring the portrait of Scipione Borghese. The pattern of the ring on the cap top is also inspired by the marble pillar inside Villa Borghese, while the top of the cap shape is inspired by his Cardinal hat. The stone in the clip is a drop stone inspired by watercolour and adds an androgynous touch. The 18kt gold nib is enriched with a fine engraving inspired by the Scipione Borghese coat of Arms.Restricted to 888 pieces worldwide. The ink bottles of Montblanc are available in our webstore. In 1992, Montblanc started the foundation "D'enterprise Montblanc de la Culture" to support and protect the contemporary arts. Steinway is inspired by the man who revolutionized the world of music, dedicating his life to the advancement of the arts. German-born Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg (1797 – 1871) built his first pianos in his kitchen, before immigrating to the United States to set up one of the greatest legacies in modern music history. With his countless patents, Steinway pioneered the modern piano and set the high standards that still prevail in piano manufacturing today. The design of the writing instrument is masterfully shaped by Steinway’s vision, celebrating both his remarkable piano innovations, and his outstanding contribution as an influential patron of the arts. He supported many artists through the Steinway Artists’ Programme that still promotes musicians today, and he made music accessible to large audiences at the Steinway Hall, once New York City’s largest concert venue. Created with traditional manufacturing techniques and the quest for perfection in Montblanc’s Atelier in Hamburg the Montblanc Patron of Art Edition Henry E. Steinway 4810 features the distinctive black and gold colour combination of a classic Steinway grand piano, with the barrel in deep black lacquer and gold-plated fittings. The fountain pen’s cap is decorated with the heart of the iconic music instrument – the harp, or overstrung piano. Hidden inside the piano, these strings play a central role in producing the instrument’s unmistakable sound, much like Steinway’s discreet role in shaping modern music history. The shape of the gold-plated clip references the once-patented screw clamps used for bending the grand piano rim into its distinctive sweeping curve. The name “Steinway & Sons”, found above the keyboard of every piano produced by Steinway, is immortalised as a fine engraving on the gold-plated cone ring, while the 750 gold nib is intricately engraved with a portrait of Henry E. Steinway himself, capturing the noble aspects of his character: determination, perfectionism and passion. The Montblanc emblem in black and white precious resin crowns the fountain pen. With every design detail, Montblanc’s limited edition writing instrument captures the remarkable achievements and personality of Henry E. Steinway: the father of the grand piano, and undoubtedly one of the great patrons of the arts. Restricted to 4810 pieces, representing the height of the Mont Blanc mountain in metres, the Patron of Art Limited Edition 4810 fountain pen is now available. The Montblanc Writers Edition 2020 is dedicated to Victor Hugo(802-1885). Victor Marie Hugo was a French writer, poet, essayist and statesman and is considered one of the most important and influential French Romantic authors of the 19th century. He has written novels, poems, plays, essays and political speeches, and also left an extensive exchange of letters.Hugo's first major novel, Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), was published in 1831. The work was so successful that it was soon translated into several European languages. It was partly intended to encourage the city of Paris to restore the neglected Notre Dame Cathedral. In addition, novels were also published, such as the famous novel Les Misérables (1862), in which Hugo turned away from social criticism. The edition is inspired in many details by Victor Hugo’s novel and by Notre-Dame. The cap and barrel are decorated with gothic arches and a rosette on the cap is an homage to the rose window of Notre-Dame. The end of the clip, which is shaped like the clapper of a bell, recalls the bell ringer Quasimodo and the bells of Notre-Dame. The cone of the Limited Edition 1831 is decorated with an engraved trefoil frieze, which is also part of the architecture of Notre-Dame. The shape of the cone, with a single chain link at the end, recalls the posts to which Quasimodo was chained. The yellow lacquer on the bottom of the cone is the reference to the yellow prisoners passport given to him. An engraving of the line ‘Chaque homme dans sa nuit s’en va vers sa lumière’(“Every man in his night goes to his light") from Les Contemplations on the cap top symbolises the idea of redemption. The cap top is also crowned by the Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl. In honour of the year of the publication of Hugo’s novel Notre-Dame de Paris (1831), the edition is limited to 1,831 pieces.
