Emperor Chinkin Dragon: when precious stone feeds imagination In China the Dragon of Azure is a symbol of strength and success. It is one of the guardians of the four cardinal directions. Appearing among the swirling clouds, the dragon casts a piercing look on the ground to protect the precious stone of Cintamani, which has the power to fulfill the wishes of the one who possesses it. These legendary creature pens are created by famous Master chiefs of the Kokkokai group of artisans. The technique used in this pen is chinkin (gold-inlay carving). Signed by Yasuji Sumi. The fantastic No. 50 18 karat gold nib is incredibly large and dwarfs the nibs on all other writing instruments. It is therefore nicknamed the ‘No. 50 Jumbo’. This fountain pen has an eyedropper filling system. It uses the same ink stopping function as the original Namiki eyedropper pens from the 1930's, which regulates the flow and prevents leakage. Rakucho Birds and Cherry Blossom: when bird song feeds imagination The Rakucho is an imaginary bird flying in paradise. Represented as a couple, it suggests the hope of a long and happy marriage, accompanied by a mutual desire for eternity. Cherry blossom petals are inlaid with mother of pearl and polished for a refined finish. The trunk of the tree in the background is painted using the oh-hi-nuri, a traditional painting of cherry blossom bark. The Chinkin Collection is made up of fountain pens which use “Chinkin (Gold Inlay)”, one of lacquer ware techniques that Japan boasts to the world on a par with Maki-e. Motifs are carved into the lacquered surface with special chisels, and after inlaying lacquer in the grooves, placing gold leaves and gold powder gives the pattern expression. This is a size No.20 pen nib fountain pen. The Urushi Collection brings the large size No.50 pen nib fountain pen of the early 1930’s, dubbed “No.50 Jumbo”, to the present. The ink stopping function is also the same as that of the original. The beauty is deepened by using non-oil lacquer for the final coat and a polishing method called “ Roiro Urushi Shiage (Non-oil lacquer finish)”, where the process of repeatedly rubbing in raw lacquer after polishing with a special charcoal.
