Omas Guglelmo Marconi "100th Anniversary of the Radio" Guglielmo Marconi was an Italian Inventor most known for inventing the radio telegraph system. Marconi is often credited as the inventor of the radio. In 1909 Marconi shared a Nobel Prize in Physics with Karl Ferdinand Braun for their contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy. During his early works Marconi had found interests in science and electricity. During this era a discovery was made by Heinrich Hertz that one could produce and detect electromagnetic radiation or now more commonly known as radio waves. Marconi begin experimenting on his own with equipment he built in his home in Pontecchio, Italy. His goal was to use radio waves to make a practical system of wireless telegraphy. This had not been a new idea, many inventors were researching this idea for over 50 years. However, Marconi did improve a number of components and adapted them to his system. In the Summer of 1894 Marconi created his own storm alarm which would go off when lighting was present. Soon after, he was able to make a bell ring in another room by pressing a telegraphic button on a bench. Marconi's father gave him all the money he had in December of 1895 after Marconi had showed him a project he was working on. Marconi purchased more supplies and in the Summer of 1895, he moved his project outdoors. By making several adjustments to his project and taking it out doors, he was able to significantly increase the range in which he could transmit signals. He was now able to send signals over approximately 2.5 Kilometers (1.5 miles). With this project Marconi concluded that with further research and funding he would be able to create a device which would be able to span over greater distances and would be valuable both commercially and for military. After being denied funding by the ministry of post and funding, Marconi along with his mother went to England. It was there that he gained interest from William Preece, the Chief Electrical Engineer of the British Post Office. A series of demonstrations for the British government followed and by March 1897, Marconi had transmitted Morse code signals over a distance of about 6 kilometers(3.7 miles). In May of 1897 Marconi had sent the first ever Morse code signal over open sea. Marconi made it possible to have wireless communication across the Atlantic Ocean and without his invention there would have been no contact made to and from the Titanic at the time of the disaster. In his later years, Marconi became a Senator in the Italian Senate as well as a Lieutenant in the Italian Army and a Commander in the Italian Navy. In 1924 Marconi was made a marquess by King Victor Emanuel III. Marconi died in 1937 at the age of 63 after a series of heartaches. In tribute, all radio stations around the world observed two minutes of silence for Guglielmo Maconi. Omas celebrates Guglielmo's life and inventions with this magnificent creation.
