I purchased this pen with a fine nib. It writes like a fine-medium. It has plenty ink flow. It is a smooth writer and is very comfortable in my hand. I can write all day. This is a pleasure to write with.
If you are eyeing this pen, you probably have made up your mind already. I have two things that I would like to point out for future buyers:
1 Get a fine or broader nib. I got an extra-fine, thinking it would be just that. While it is rather fine, with it being a European pen, its extra-fine nib just won't be as fine as a Japanese extra-fine. I encourage you to go for a broader nib.
2 There is a small ring at the end of the section, which seems to be part of the nib/feed unit. It´s made of a porous material, so it retains some ink after you dip the pen to refill it. You should always press a napkin or paper towel (a little longer than you do with other pens) to make sure it is as dry and ink-free as possible,
The last thing I wanted to mention, and a very important one at that, is that their customer service is outstanding. From the moment you place the order to when you get the product, they answer your emails and keep you up to date.
This pen is truly amazing. Its a classic and iconic pen. The nib writes great and its a workhorse, The only disadvantage of the pen is that you dont touch your other pens anymore.
It's not very often that a company designs a product that is so good that it becomes an icon. Montblanc did just that when they designed and released the Meisterstück line 14_ . Such a timeless look that it remains unchanged. When fine writing instruments is mentioned it is Montblanc and their Meisterstück line that comes to everyone's mind.
The 146 is the midsized pen in the line. In my opinion, it is the perfect sized pen, especially for longer writing sessions. The grip section is not as thin as the 144 and not as large as the 149 so to me it is just right. The pen has a piston fill system that allows it to hold alot of ink and it's easy view ink window allows you to see the ink level. The nib is a large number 6 size that has beautiful scroll work. The nib has great flow and is a bit on the wet side that makes this pen a joy to write with.
If I had to choose only one pen to keep in my collection, it would be the reliable and wonderful writing Montblanc 146.
I have owned a 146 for about 10 years and it is the most prized pen in my collection. A pleasure to use daily, this pen feels right in the hand while the deep black resin with gold trim are pleasing to the eye. This is a generational pen built with such quality and craftsmanship it will be passed on to one of my granddaughters.
This review is written after a month and a half of daily use.
It is a very high-quality pen, fact visible on all aspects: writing experience, attention to details and production. The resin is relatively lightweight and gives the pen a great balance when posted or unposted. It has a great size and feels comfortable regardless of where you grip the pen.
I recommend cleaning it with water and a touch of soap before using it, as it improved the ink flow. It writes with little to no effort, which justifies the pen to be used as a daily writer.
I ordered a Fine nib; the written line is broader than expected when using ordinary copy paper (it does not feather or see through the other side though), but on thicker paper, such as Rhodia it indeed writes finer, like an European-type fine nib. It has a very slight italic character and gives you a tendency to write in a more calligraphic manner.
The experience with Appelboom was stellar and I am sure it won't be the last one.
I've been using this pen every day for several weeks and the overall experience just keeps getting better. It's a fantastic writer. The Fine nib lays down a smooth, wet line. Overall balance of this pen is near perfection. It has quickly risen to the top of my collection and is the pen I reach for most often. As others have said, this pen is not inexpensive. That being said, the workmanship, quality, attention to detail, and overall joy of writing are well worth the premium.
I also must give kudos to Appelboom who made the ordering process painless, shipping fast and transparent, and customer focus outstanding! Nicely done!
The pen is great. I compared a couple of seller and finally chose Appelboom. The delivery was super fast to Australia and the packing was very careful, even it had a gift wrapping paper. But the website is hard for Ipad.
I am in the U.S. and had heard good things about Appelboom so I ordered the Montblanc 146 from them. Although Montblanc's may be overpriced I wanted it to complete my collection of fountain pens (Visconti, Pelikan, Parker, Aurora). Their price was reasonable for such a pen. I hesitated ordering a second hand pen on the web as I have heard about fakes. Appelboom's service was excellent. The pen arrived via Fed Ex in a timely manner and was packaged very well! The pen is wonderful. It is very classy and well made. I am happy to have it in my collection.
I live in the US and heard good things about Appelboom from fountain pen videos on different sites. I wanted an unusual and different birthday present for my boyfriend. Good price for a Montblanc 146 Meisterstuck. Had it personalized, which came out beautifully. I knew it was to arrive in 7 days but did not have tracking number so emailed Appelboom who responded quickly with the number. The package had arrived but I was not home to receive it and FedEx did not leave any door hanger to evidence they had been there. FedEx in this part of the US can be haphazard at times so it was a good thing Appelboom provided the tracking number. Great, pen, great service and the giftwrapping was a plus. Fantastic company for your high end fountain pen needs.
