The unique design and quality of a Kaweco fountain pen
A Kaweco pen is easy to recognize by its design. Most models come with a characteristic octagonal cap design and in a compact pocket size, making it ideal for carrying around with you. Bright colors are also a feature that can often be found in Kaweco pens, with all the colors of the rainbow represented in the vast collection.
German “Gründlichkeit”
Kaweco prides itself on their German “Gründlichkeit”: thoroughness and attention to every detail. Each pen is assembled by hand in Nuremberg Germany, from parts produced in factories from no less than four countries.
This level of care can be seen and felt in every part of their pens. Regardless of the material used, each individual pen is functionally designed and durable, which makes it an ideal pen for everyday use. If you’re a beginning fountain pen writer looking for a good starter pen, Kaweco is an excellent option to get acquainted with the joy and characteristics of a fountain pen.

Which Kaweco fountain pen is for you?
Kaweco pens share a lot of the same qualities and looks, but there are distinct features that make each model stand out on its own. Read more about each pen and compare your favorites to find out which one is right for you.
Kaweco Sport fountain pen
Kaweco Sport pens are probably the manufacturer’s best known products. Typical for the various Sport series is their compact pocket size, without feeling small in the hand. The caps on each model are octagonally-faceted, as are the bodies of the rollerball, ballpoint and mechanical pencil versions.
However, the individual models have their own characteristic style and are made from different materials, including carbon fibre, aluminum, steel and brass. Furthermore, the prices vary from easily affordable to relatively more expensive, serving both starting writers and more experienced fountain pen enthusiasts.
If you’re eager to learn more about this popular series, be sure to read our Kaweco Sport info page, which is specially dedicated to the Kaweco Sport.
If you’re interested in buying one of these phenomenal compact writing instruments, you can choose either of the following Kaweco Sport models from our store:
- Kaweco Classic Sport
- Kaweco Frosted Sport
- Kaweco Skyline Sport
- Kaweco AL Sport
- Kaweco Brass Sport
- Kaweco AC Sport

Kaweco Perkeo fountain pen
The Kaweco Perkeo is an ideal fountain pen for everyone trying their hand on their first fountain pen. Not only is it very affordable at only 15 euros (17 dollars), its minimalistic and ergonomic design, large ink intake and lightweight plastic body also make it extremely accessible.
Perkeo pens are significantly larger than, for example, the Classic Sport, measuring 139mm closed and 160mm with the cap posted versus 105mm and 133mm respectively. Its steel nibs are available in Fine and Medium.
The faceted cap and barrel are what you have come to expect from a Kaweco pen, but it has fewer stylish details than its Sport counterparts. Seeing however that the Perkeo is targetting beginning writers and leans heavily on form over function, the understated and minimalistic look is actually quite fitting.
Kaweco Liliput fountain pen
If you’re looking for something even smaller and more portable than the Kaweco Sport, then the Kaweco Liliput is the pen for you. This model measures in at a mere 96mm when closed and 125mm with the cap posted, making it one of the smallest fountain pens that accepts standard cartridges.
Despite its size, the Liliput fountain pen is comfortable to handle and offers a great writing quality. There are multiple pens on the market, made from different quality metals: aluminum, brass, copper and stainless steel. The special Liliput Fireblue series comes with a unique hand-torched metal body.
Kaweco Student fountain pen
The Kaweco Student differs from the usual style of Kaweco pens in that it has a curved body lacking the characteristic octagonal shape. Made of high-quality resin with finely crafted metal details, these pens bring a great visual experience to the table as well as a quality performance to the paper.
Choose one of the models based on the style of a decade – 50’s Rock, 60’s Swing and 70’s Soul – or instead opt for classic Black or Red. There is even the fully transparent Student Clear pen with a demonstrator body, which shows off all components that are inside.
Kaweco Special fountain pen
Lovers of slim, sleek and minimalistic designs should definitely consider the Kaweco Special. These pens with their straight, faceted body and screw cap possess a level of class that is understated yet obvious. It is available in Blue, Black (both made of aluminum) or Brass.
Kaweco Dia2 fountain pen
The Kaweco Dia2 is based on the original DIA pen from the 1920s, which is still clearly visible in its design. Classy aluminum details and a distinctive knurling on the cap and barrel transport you to the Roaring Twenties. The pen is available with a timeless black body and either Gold or Chrome details.
Kaweco nibs: the size and quality
Despite their small size – fitting for a pocket pen – Kaweco nibs are great for both starting and experienced writers, with a noticeable level of quality. Furthermore, they don’t run dry, which of course adds to your writing pleasure. Kaweco fountain pens normally come with a steel nib, although some special limited editions come with a 14k gold nib. Replacing the nibs is easy and replacement nibs and other accessories are commonly available in our store. This offers a great opportunity to try out different nib sizes to see which one suits your handwriting best. If you prefer writing with a gold nib, you can buy a separate nib unit for your Kaweco Sport and replace the steel one in your pen.

How to refill a Kaweco fountain pen
Kaweco fountain pens come with either a converter or cartridge filling mechanism. Either way, refilling the pens is easy. Here’s how you do it:
- To change cartridges: twist the barrel to remove it, revealing the ink cartridge. Then simply pull the empty cartridge from the grip section and insert a new one, after which you attach the barrel and continue writing.
- To fill the converter: twist the barrel to reveal the converter underneath. Filling the converter depends on what type you’re using. For a piston mechanism, dip the nib in a bottle of ink and twist the knob at the end of the converter to open the chamber and twist it again to fill it with ink. Continue until it is full and wipe any spilled ink off the nib. If you use a squeeze converter, this works very much the same way, only instead of twisting the knob you squeeze the reservoir a few times to fill it.
