The Sailor Nawate Kuroginhaku Fountain Pen is a masterwork of Japanese craftsmanship — a union of traditional Urushi artistry, modern design, and Sailor’s world-renowned writing performance. Created by lacquer artist Toru Yoshida, third-generation master of Shikko Yoshida in Aizu Wakamatsu, this collection embodies the quiet brilliance and depth of black through the delicate technique of Kuroginhaku (black silver foil).
A Dual Expression of Light and Shadow
The Nawate Kuroginhaku collection presents two exquisite finishes:
- Sei (惺) – A lustrous glossy finish that radiates like a star against the jet-black night sky.
- Ei (影) – A refined matte finish that reveals subtle depth beneath the soft illumination of moonlight.
Layers of Urushi lacquer are brushed in irregular strokes, upon which black silver foil is purposefully scattered by hand. This meticulous process gives each pen unique shading, texture, and shifting reflections, capturing nuances that no uniform surface could replicate.
Design & Craftsmanship
The cap features a stria-shaped design, giving the pen a sense of graceful length and providing a stable, comfortable grip. Both cap and barrel are crafted from ebonite, finished with Urushi lacquer and Kuroginhaku foil, while the grip section is made of durable PMMA resin. The pen is elegantly appointed with gold IP-plated metal accents.
Inside, a 21K gold nib—available in M or L sizes—offers Sailor’s signature smoothness, balance, and responsiveness.
Each piece is presented in a traditional Paulownia wood box, symbolizing Japanese refinement and respect for artistry.
