This is a special pen – I can say that with confidence now. Interestingly, I hesitated for quite a long time. Is it going to be just another black-and‑gold pen? I wondered. It turns out the answer is no. The Urushi lacquer makes a significant difference. Its appearance is unique, and the tactile feel is unlike regular resin. Photos and videos don’t capture it, unfortunately. The size is perfect in my hand, which, honestly, was probably the biggest selling point for me. And then there’s the nib – wet, bouncy, and wonderfully smooth. A real pleasure to write with. I chose a Medium nib, and like most Japanese pens, it writes finer than a European Medium. The bounciness of the nib enhances ink shading. For example, J. Herbin Bleu de Minuit doesn’t usually shade much in my other pens, but with this nib it produced surprisingly rich shading. I’m truly glad I finally decided to buy this beauty.

The Pilot Custom Urushi is simply gorgeous and the feel of quality in hand is very impressive. The service and shipping by Appelboom was fantastic as always. Five stars all the way.

This is a beautiful, amazing pen. I also have the Pilot Custom 845, which is smaller than this pen, and I prefer the smaller (yet still relatively large) size, but again, the Pilot Custom Urushi is an amazing piece of craftsmanship and art, and, as always, great service from Appelboom.
