Dark Lilac Review

  • Review Add on: 02-03-2026

I had no possibility to try the original Dark Lilac from 2016; however, the modern reissued Dark Lilac is great in my opinion. It has LOTS of nice green to gold sheen and is best in very fine nibs. It is very saturated and has a bit of "nib creep", though I think it is expected with such saturated formulations.

Reliable & practical

LAMY inks are always reliable & good value, but rarely exciting. The sturdy & very practical ink bottle is what you would expect from their bauhaus aesthetic. No sheen or shimmer here, but I like rather than love, the Petrol colour.

Lamy Petrol - more teal than blue

  • Review Add on: 23-10-2025

The Lamy Petrol, to my eye, is more teal than blue, a dark teal.
It's a color I like, so I have some teal colored pens to use it with. I think it will also look lovely in transparent pens.
Since the color is quite dark, I think that it can also fit as a conservative color (for work, if there are stringent rules).
The bottle is unique, it has a plastic cylinder around the bottom with paper for cleaning the nib. For me the paper is too narrow, so I don't use it, but this allows the glass bottle to be deeper in the middle - good for bigger nibs and also for collecting the last drops of ink.

Dark Lilac

No idea why the link now ends up on the petrol one.
I did not try the 2016 Dark Lilac. The recent one is good and does behave quite well as many many reviewers already showed. Not much surprise in the end.
With regards to the nibs :
- With an EF (Lamy) only the lilac part shows up, no trace of the green tint.
- With an F (Lamy or Waterman) the green may in very rare occasion appear.
- With a Pelikan M or Lamy 1.1 the green tends to show quite fast, sometimes more than the lilac part.
- With very wet, brush like nibs, the lilac part doesn't even show at all, it's all green dark and bright at the same time, giving « alt Goldgrün » vibes.

I have a few cartridges of the original Dark Lilac (2016) and this is a different ink. That doesn't mean it's worse, however. It's a nice ink, with a heavy green sheen. On Tomoe River paper t's almost as if the ink is green with a purple sheen, not the other way around. If you're looking for a pure purple, maybe this is not for you. If you enjoy sheen, green and purple, you found a good one.

2024 version of LAMY Dark Lilac Ink

  • Review Add on: 01-01-2025

I have never used the famed older version of LAMY’s Dark Lilac, but didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to try the 2024 edition. I can’t compare them, but imagine the gold sheen in 2016 was quite beautiful. What you get here is a very strong shiny green sheen, which on Tomoe River almost overpowered the purple in a swab, and left mossy green lettering. On so e other paper the purple was more pronounced. It wrote well in my LAMY DIALOG 3 M, though left a moss crust on the nib and feed which might not appeal to all users. However on other paper the purple was more obvious, a nice deep color. I’m glad I’ve added it to my growing collection!
