Macassar OB

  • Review Add on: 15-11-2024

I’ve been eyeing this Macassar for almost a year, and when I learned they were offering oblique nibs, I decided to take the plunge. Unfortunately, it seems they have already stopped producing obliques for it, but I managed to get mine in an OB. The writing experience is fantastic, even though the nib initially seemed a bit misaligned. However, that’s just the way it’s designed. The line is very broad, wet, and wonderfully wide—truly delightful. I’m certain their usual broad and medium nibs would provide a similarly satisfying experience.

Now, why are companies so reluctant to offer more diverse nib options?

Anyway, the pen is gorgeous and larger than I expected. Appelboom’s service was great as always, with lightning-fast shipping and excellent packaging.

A wonderful pen

This is one of the best pens I own in all aspects. It looks elegant, it's very well engineered and has the best tactile experience I've ever had when it comes to its nib (I bought an EF), truly velvety and different from any other. I like it so much that I adapted my line width preferences (this is an European EF, so too wide for someone that loves Japanese EF and even needlepoints), because the writing experience is really worth it. I don't have a scale, but it's for sure over 35 grams uncapped, and the section girth is 8.75 mm at its thinnest, 9.75 mm at its widest. I don't find it particularly slippery, but then I rarely do.

Graf von Faber-Castell Classic Macassar in Fine nib

  • Review Add on: 22-07-2024

Special order and my first high end-pen coming from the lower Faber-Castell lineup (Essentio and Hexo). The fine nib likes a medium wet ink (Some of the Graf inks are a bit drier, such as Deep Sea Green, so don't be afraid to try other inks in this pen to get the maximum pleasure). What will work with a broad, buttery smooth nib, may not be the same on the fine. That said, it is a bit thicker in line width than a Lamy Fine using the same ink. Minimal feedback, but this depends on the paper/ink of course. Aesthetically, it is a fingerprint magnet on the coated metallic surfaces, but this does not bother me. Lastly, the Macassar wood is a gorgeous wood; the wax they coat it with from factory is shiny and is perhaps darker than the lighter hues shown in the official pictures based on wood variation. So, be aware of this if you are interested. Loving this pen and looking forward to many years of its use. Thanks again to Joost and the nib specialist for checking the pen before delivery!

Wonderful in every way

The Macassar is an elegant, decently weighted pen that is perfect for every scenario. Attractive and decently formal enough for a fancy office, but with enough interesting features to stand out from most other pens!
