I am a lefty, and have been in search of a pen and nib that work optimally for me for several years now, with mixed results. After reading a Scrively review of the Pelikan M800, I decided to give this pen (with a Fine nib) a try, and am so glad I did. The pen has heft without being too heavy, fits perfectly in the hand, and the section is quite comfortable. The piston mechanism is the smoothest I have used. It feels quite solid.
But, for me it is the Fine nib that makes this pen. Although they are supposed to be a good choice for lefties, I usually struggle with fine nibs because of more feedback than I would like, which makes writing feel like work. Not so with this nib! It is very smooth, and lays down the perfect amount of ink. None of the pens in my collection surpasses the writing experience this one provides.
Traveling from Canada, I was very privileged to personally visit the Appelboom store in Laren during the last week in May. My intention was to purchase a Pelikan fountain pen. I settled on this one, the M800. I liked the weight of it and the balanced feel in my hand. This model has a brass piston mechanism which sets it apart from its smaller siblings. It also has a larger 18K F nib. Although the nib is not very springy, it writes smoothly. It’s feedback is subtle. The nib is wet but not overly. And yes, this Fine nib writes with a slightly wider line that is typical for those crafted in Europe (generally speaking). This is a beautiful writing instrument. It’s build quality is high. It feels luxurious in my hand. For me, it is a real privilege to have this pen as part of my collection of regular writers. Joost was a great help with this purchase. The Appelboom store is lovely and the town of Laren is beautiful.
Very good price at Appelboom, especially with the coupon. The Pelikan M800 is a high quality fountain pen and well worth the price. Joost special ordered the pen for me and when shipped took only two days to arrive from Holland to Canada.
This was my first order with Appelboom. Ordered the pen, and it was delivered within 1 week. Joost also fulfilled my request to test the nib to ensure that it was smooth and indeed wrote like an extra fine nib (the one I ordered). He was very prompt in replying to my emails. The pen was received very well packed, along with a personal thank you note. Will be a repeat customer! And the prices are hard to beat, especially here in the USA.
