An M800 with some interesting twists.
It’s actually two colors.The cap, section and ink window, and the turning nob are all shiny black plastic. All of the metal parts are a matching very dark matte gray.An intense, dark look.
The sheath over the body is metal. This effects the feel and the weight balance.The metal has a matte treatment,so it’s not slick and is easily gripped.It has a cold feel, compared to plastic or ebonite.
The metal sheath makes pen is heavier,but it’s not an issue unposted. Posted it feels a little back weighted.
I think this is a very attractive pen with a subtle and serious power to get the job done,instead of a bright, colorful, eye-popping flair.You will need to decide if that matches your personality.
It’s such an elegant pen to look at and hold. I have trouble putting this pen down. A gorgeous writing instrument that I’ll be enjoying for years to come. I got the fine nib and it’s been very smooth right out of the box. I have a few other gold nib colourful pens but this blackout pen is in a league of its own; especially with the matte black nib. Really love how they did the textured finish on the nib. It’s not the typical polished smooth finish. Adds so much depth to the pen. Very happy with my purchase
pen has a solid feel and is a diverse design vs the historical pelikan models. very dart and mysterious. Joost and his team did an amazing job of service and delivery, as they always do. thank you, Appelboom!
This pen feels really well made and the matte finish feels very nice.
I was surprised of the weight: it’s 41gramm (with cap), my brown striped M800 is only 29gramm.
The black nib is also matte and looks really nice, often black nibs are a shiny black.
I got an EF and it was scratchy out of the box: the tines were misaligned. I could fix it.
Be aware that the black coating adds feedback to the writing, comparable to a sailor or Platinum nib- especially in small nib sizes like EF.
I have this pen in both medium and broad nibs. The broad nib has a stub nib quality. The pen itself is a perfect writer, perfectly balanced, very cool matte black from cap to 18k nib. I am adding this second review because, for some reason, my original review gave this pen 4 stars, which was NOT my intention. I think it was a glitch in the review system because there are several 4 star reviews whose review content suggests a more 5-star review.
This is the M800 Pelikan pen you didn’t know you really needed…until you hold it in your hands. The body is made of metal and gives this pen a substantive weight that is perfect, much like the M815 metal stripes pen. On top of that, you get a very special black 18k nib. The entire design aesthetic conveys stealth and understatedness. I decided to include it in my permanent rotation of everyday-use fountain pens. And, as always, Appelboom is the place to get it, the best place to purchase fountain pens, hands down.
I recently received my beautiful (and beautifully packaged by Appelboom) Pelikan M809. Pictures do not do this pen justice - the contrast between the matte black body and the glossy cap and piston knob is subtle but fantastic from a design perspective. The matte black nib is also striking and really differentiates the M809 from my little flock of M800s and M805s.
The pen feels substantial in the hand and balances extremely well. My medium nib is smooth and has a very generous ink flow. I find it very satisfying to watch bright inks (red, teal, green) flow out of this blacked out pen - it feels unexpected and a bit wrong (in the best possible way).
I am extremely satisfied with my M809 and the great service I received from Appelboom.
