Platinum Pen introduces a reproduction of the Hayakawa Mechanical Pencil, originally created by Tokuji Hayakawa in 1915, the founder of Sharp Corporation. Hayakawa, leveraging his early apprenticeship in decorative metalworking, crafted 15 mechanical pencils adorned with intricate designs on their exterior. These original pencils are now preserved at the Sharp Technology Innovation Museum in Tenri City, Nara Prefecture. Platinum Pen’s version closely mirrors one of these historical models.

While modern technology enhances the interior of the pencil, featuring 0.5 mm lead and a new lead advancement mechanism, the exterior is meticulously crafted using the engine-turning technique. This process engraves delicate patterns by hand, replicating the unique aesthetic of the original design. The weight, feel, and overall design of the pencil reflect the Taisho Romanticism era (1912-1926), which fused Western and Japanese artistic styles. The pencil’s craftsmanship evokes the beauty and timeless appeal of the period, instilling a sense of pride in its owner.

The Platinum Hayakawa Silver Limited Edition Mechanical Pencil is also designed with functionality in mind. The top is engraved with a subtle pattern to prevent slippage when rotating, while the intricate engravings on the barrel, created through engine turning, shine brilliantly, rivaling metallic ornaments. This technique uses a small steel ball to engrave fine lines, resulting in a detailed and intricate pattern.

In 1919, Shunichi Nakata, started his fountain pen business that would later be known as “Platinum Fountain Pen Co.”. The Japanese brand is closely related to the legendary Nakaya fountain pen brand, where some of the finest fountain pens in the world are created.
