The Pineider Alchemist Kilauea Blue fountain pen is made from a new material with extraordinary properties: zeolite. This material is considered by many to be a universal panacea or the alchemist’s stone, sometimes known as the philosopher’s stone or the fifth element.

Zeolites are volcanic minerals formed millions of years ago by an encounter of lava and seawater. The name literally means ‘boiled (zeo) stone (lithos)’. The material in the Alchemist pens consists of over 40% pure zeolite. This makes the pen highly durable, but also gives it a very pleasant tactile feeling. Because the material is microporous, the surface is velvety to the touch and naturally hygroscopic, giving it an excellent grip when held.

The pen closes with Pineider’s famous twist magnetic lock.

The Pineider Alchemist fountain pen is a cartridge/converter filled pen with a steel semi-flexible nib.

There is also a luxury version of this fountain pen, which uses the Mystery Filler piston filling mechanism and is equipped with a 14 kt gold flexible nib and an ink window.

I was really excited to receive my Alchemist pen. As always, Appelboom’s price was very competitive. I was not disappointed. The quill nib is a pleasure to write with and gives a juicy flow of ink. The texture of the body is very comfortable to hold/grip. This pen compares well to some of my Visconti HS lava pens. A great success.

Aesthetically, the pen is lovely to look at and, in my opinion, is even more attractive than the gold nib version, especially when uncapped. The material feels very much like Visconti lava pens --warm and comfortable. The ergonomics of the writing experience are excellent with this pen. However, where the pen really shines is the nib. This is, without question, the most enjoyable steel nib I have ever used. It is soft, bouncy and comparable in writing experience to many of my much more expensive gold nib pens. In fact, if I were to use this pen blindfolded, I would likely think I was writing with a gold nib pen--it is that good! Overall, I give this pen my highest possible recommendation. The value for the price-including build quality, aesthetics, material and especially the outstanding nib-are well worth the price. As usual, ordering from Appelboom is a pleasure--and who doesn't like opening a package that contains stroopwafel cookies? Thanks Appelboom.
