The art of damascening is handcrafted at the highest level and is thousands of years old. The new Pelikan Special Edition Toledo M910 White Fountain pen celebrates this special craftsmanship. The biggest highlight of this edition is the decorative sleeve. Several elaborate steps are necessary to refine the detailed pelican motif on the barrel. The Toledo M910 White special pelican motif is refined by hand by a goldsmith with many expressive details, so that the very individual expression gives the writing instrument its vibrancy. Two pelican motifs can be seen on the surrounding 925 sterling silver sleeve: a small pelican stands together in front of a pelican with widened wings and the second motif shows a pelican with an open beak. Both motifs are framed by ornaments. During the manufacturing process, the design is etched onto the sleeve and then the filigree details are stitched by hand. Finally, the surface of the barrel is coated with palladium.

The art of working with Damascus steel goes back thousands of years. It means that steel or iron objects are decorated by engraving a pattern into the surface. Next, a thin sheet of gold will be placed over the pattern and will be embossed deep into the material with the help of a little hammer. In order to show the newly filled pattern, the object will then be heated to approximately 800°C. By doing so, the steel surfaces will oxidize and turn black, while the gold starts to shine.
