Design, material and dimensions
Pelikan from Germany is highly respected as a pen manufacturer and their products are extremely popular because of their attractive designs and quality. The Souverän M1000 is the company's showpiece, which is clearly reflected in its design.
The pen's large barrel is made from high-quality resin. The black and green model also contains celluloid acetate, used to create the iconic green stripes. Gold plated trimmings ensure a sophisticated finish, as they blend perfectly with the glossy black for a classic and refined look.
The screw cap is adorned with the characteristic beak-shaped clip and the Pelikan logo on the top, both in gold. But hidden beneath the cap is what makes the Souverän M1000 truly special: a particularly large, 18kt gold nib. Complemented with a rhodium décor and tested by hand before distribution, the nib is without a doubt the star of this show.
Pen size and weight
In size and weight, the Pelikan Souverän M1000 is the clear leader of the Souverän line and among Pelikan pens in general. The pen is 145 mm long with closed cap, and 174 mm with the cap posted. Not surprisingly, the weight is considerable as well, with the pen weighing 34,1 grams without ink.
Because of its dimensions and weight, the Souverän M1000 is balanced out best in a rather large hand. If your hands are small, the pen might feel somewhat backheavy. In that case – or if you simply prefer smaller or lighter pens – we recommend having a look at the smaller Pelikan models. Because thankfully, Pelikan produces excellent alternatives, such as the slightly smaller M800 (141 mm closed; 29,3 grams), the even smaller M600 (134 mm closed; 16 grams), or the much smaller M400 (125 mm closed; 15,3 grams).

Nib on the Pelikan Souverän M1000
The Pelikan Souverän M1000 is fitted with a bi-colour nib, made out of 18kt gold, refined with rhodium elements. Like the rest of the pen, the nib is wide and large, larger than most nibs you will come across.
But don’t focus too heavily on the nib's size, because the key feature is its performance. The nib is soft, springy and full of character. It offers a softer writing experience than most modern pens, which tend to be rather stiff. You don't need a lot of pressure to make it work its wonders.
The nib on the Pelikan M1000 is wet and the ink flow is generous, allowing for a graciously flowing writing style. Quality is all, as each nib is hand-tested in the factory to guarantee the quality fountain pen lovers have come to expect of Pelikan pens.

Available varieties of the Pelikan Souverän M1000
The regular collection of the Pelikan Souverän M1000 fountain pen comes in only two varieties: Black and Black-Green. Both encapsule the class and quality of this special range of pens. The Black M1000 is fully set in a deep black of high-quality resin with gold details and a demonstrator window. The Black-Green has the green-striped barrel that has become so popular and loved that it is often seen as the iconic Souverän look.
Occasionally, Pelikan releases a limited edition of the M1000 series, in a different stylish colour, with silver trims instead of gold, or highly decorative pens covered in exclusive Japanese lacquer work and with inlays of precious materials.
How to fill the Pelikan Souverän M1000
Like nearly all Pelikan fountain pens, the Souverän M1000 uses the patented differentiated piston mechanism. Thanks to the size of the barrel, the pen can hold a large amount of ink. Filling the pen works the same as other piston filler pens:
Twist the piston knob at the end of the barrel to push the air out of the pen. Then fully submerge the nib in ink and twist the knob back to fill the chamber with ink. All that is left for you to do, is letting the pen drip for a moment and wipe any excess ink from the nib before you continue writing.
The Pelikan Souverän M1000 vs the Souverän M800
At first glance, you may think that all Souverän fountain pens are quite similar, except for the size. This is however not the case for the M1000. Besides being the biggest pen in the range, it has a much bigger, softer and springier nib than that of the other models, which are more rigid.
Therefore, if you are unsure whether you should buy a Pelikan Souverän M800 or a M1000, take the nibs into account as well. When it comes to size, the M1000 is 5 mm longer with closed cap and 10 mm longer when posted. It is also nearly 5 grams heavier than the M800, which weighs 29,3 grams. While both pens are definitely large, the difference in size and weight may be the deciding factor, depending on your personal preferences.
The Pelikan Souverän M1000 vs the Montblanc Meisterstück 149
The Pelikan Souverän M1000 has a formidable rival in the Montblanc Meisterstück 149. Both pens are the flagships for their respective manufacturers and there are in fact a lot of similarities between the two, but also some important differences.
Size
Size wise the pens are very similar when closed, with a length of around 145 mm. With the cap posted the M1000 is considerably longer 175 mm as opposed to the 149's 165 mm. Also, when it comes to weight, the Pelikan trumps the Montblanc by being 5 grams heavier than its counterpart.
Nibs
The large nib on the Pelikan Souverän M1000 is springier than that of the Montblanc Meisterstück 149. It also gives a more generous ink flow. Which one is the best, really depends on your writing style. For writing that flows smoother along the paper, the M1000 is probably the pen of choice.
Price
Both pens are high in quality, but accordingly high in price as well. The Montblanc 149 however, costs around 260 euros ($300) more than the Pelikan M1000. While the price is not the only deciding factor to buy the Souverän, it is hard to ignore this difference.
