Created by Montegrappa in collaboration with Mongolian luxury goods specialists Tavan Nuden, the Chingis Khaan fountain pen pays tribute to Chingis Khaan (1162-1227): the legendary warrior, leader and founder of the Mongolian Empire – a figure named ‘Man of the Millennium’ by both the Washington Post and Time magazine. Chingis Khaan (often spelled as Genghis Khan) was a warrior and political reformer whose conquests brought unprecedented peace and order to the world. His profile and signature crown a writing instrument steeped in history.

Created in an edition of 99 fountain pens only, this special-edition design comprises sterling silver, vermeil, enamel and Eternal Blue Sky Montegrappite. Full-length precious-metal segments created with lost wax casting continue in the tradition of our historical editions: steeped in detail and storytelling. Two vermeil panoramas on the barrel illustrate raiding Mongol horsemen, soaring above landmarks from a vast empire which stretched from the Pacific Ocean to the Caspian Sea.

The handmade 18K gold nib bears the mark of Ongi – an ancient symbol of heaven and earth found on coins minted during the Universal Ruler’s reign. The 99 fountain pens in this edition bear the names of two artisanal guardians from opposite ends of the earth: emblematic of the largest contiguous empire the world has ever known.

A lozenge pocket clip in vermeil displays a relief of Genghis Khan in profile, with his Mongol name below. Beneath, the cap is encircled by Mongol inscriptions from the emperor’s Imperial Seal. Adopted by Genghis Khan at the commencement of his reign, the Imperial Seal was a proclamation of unprecedented power. The only known original example resides in the Vatican Apostolic Archive.
“By the power of the eternal heaven. Order of Great Khan of the Mongol Empire. The order shall be followed and feared by every citizen who should receive it.”

Mongolia’s Universal Ruler knew that before he could have a nation, he needed to have a law. The law of the Eternal Blue Sky taught the unification and tolerance of all religions, cultures and languages. Writing was the first gift that Genghis Khan gave to his people.

Traces of Tavan Nuden’s influence are found throughout the design: most notably on a gilded, enamel-filled cap top. The luxury brand’s ‘five eyes’ emblem is deeply rooted in Mongolian culture.

The Chingis Khaan (colloquial spelling) fountain pen is piston-fed and is fitted with a 6mm, 18K gold custom-nib (EF, F, M, B, Stub 1.1) inscribed with the ancient Ongi symbol – a glyph representing heaven and earth – beneath the Tavan Nuden name.

This editions comes with a bottle of ink (with custom cap) and is delivered in a custom wooden case with curly walnut veneer and set with a golden Genghis Khan cameo.

Italy's first pen producer, Montegrappa, began manufacturing pens in 1912 in its factory in Bassano del Grappa in Italy. Utilizing natural celluloid and precious metals,Montegrappa combines traditional methods such as die-casting with more recent innovations as low-relief engraving to form their precious art objects. Whether Montegrappa use colors reminiscent of the master painters or ornamentation suggestive of Baroque palaces, the Italian heritage and romance is infused into each product.
