The Nikola Tesla Collection is the 35th installment in the David Oscarson™ series of Limited Edition writing instruments. Produced in three color variations, each limited to an aggregate production of 86 pieces (including fountain pens and roller balls), the Nikola Tesla collection stands as a lasting tribute to the life, energy, and passion of one of the world’s greatest minds.
Craftsmanship
Hand-crafted in solid Sterling Silver, the Tesla collection incorporates elements of the inventor’s inventions, thoughts, and ideas. Nikola Tesla’s signature is prominently displayed in high relief on the pen barrel, along with a rotating magnetic field and the symbol for Alternating Current. The Tesla Coil is seen in the background, engraved in low relief. The gripping section is engraved with his AC Generator and Induction motor drawings. High relief electricity surrounds the Tesla Tower clip on the cap, and an X-Ray of Tesla’s hand can be seen in the low relief coil in the background. Atop the crown in high relief stands a Tesla unit of measure for magnetic induction or magnetic flux density, equivalent to one weber per meter squared, and resting against the breast is Tesla’s beloved white pigeon.
Hard Enamel
The Nikola Tesla Collection continues in the spirit of artistic mastery and the tradition of Old World craftsmanship by combining the centuries-old technique of Guilloché with the art and expertise of Hard Enamel. Using a mortar and pestle, a composition of glass, water, and metal oxides is ground for hours by hand. When settled, the water is removed, leaving the fine paste that is the basis for hard enamel. A quill is then used to apply each coat of the mixture to the surface of the metal, ensuring that the entire guilloché area is completely covered in enamel. The components are then fired in a furnace at temperatures exceeding 1,000° F, fusing the enamel to the metal and forming a layer of glass. After cooling, the pieces are manually ground with a diamond file, restoring their proper shape and surface. This tedious process is repeated at length until the level of enamel reaches the depth required to cover the peaks and fill the valleys of each intricate guilloché pattern. When the final stages of firing are completed, the pieces are polished and buffed, revealing the velvet finish of translucent hard enamel.
Filling System
David Oscarson’s unique filling system accommodates a cartridge, converter, or eyedropper fill; a series of seals and “O” rings prevent the ink from leaving the chamber at any point. A roller ball version of each Oscarson Collection piece is also available. Engineered in Heidelberg, Germany, the 18-karat gold nib is unsurpassed in quality and form. Coupled with an ebonite feeder, each nib is plated with rhodium and tipped with iridium to ensure durability in fine, medium, and broad sizes.
Color Variations
The Nikola Tesla Collection will be produced in three color variations:
- Translucent White, Lavender, Deep Purple, and Opaque Black
- Translucent Red, Orange, Yellow, White, and Opaque Black in gold vermeil
- Translucent White, Grey, Mossy Black, and Opaque Black
Each color variation is limited to an aggregate production of 86 pieces, one for each year of Tesla’s life.
