On March 14, 1314, after enduring six and a half years of brutal torture, Jacques de Molay was slow-roasted at the stake in Paris—executed for refusing to continue a false confession under pressure from King Philip IV of France and Pope Clement V. Though he had once confessed to the charges of heresy to escape torment, he publicly retracted his confession, proclaiming the innocence and sanctity of the Knights Templar. Rather than live in shame, de Molay chose death with dignity. “Life is offered to me, but at the price of infamy. At such a price, life is not worth having.”
