The Golden Spike Collection by David Oscarson™ commemorates the monumental achievement of the first transcontinental railroad in the United States. On May 10, 1869, the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads met at Promontory Summit, Utah, symbolizing the unification of the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. This historic event is immortalized in this meticulously crafted collection, which stands as a tribute to the more than 4,000 workers who contributed to this engineering marvel.
Design and Craftsmanship
Each writing instrument in the Golden Spike Collection is a masterpiece of Old World craftsmanship, combining the centuries-old technique of guilloché with the art and expertise of hard enamel. The cap and barrel of the pen feature intricate engravings representing the courses of the two engines—Jupiter (Central Pacific) from Sacramento, California, and No. 119 (Union Pacific) from Omaha, Nebraska. These paths converge at Promontory Summit, Utah, depicted in high relief. The seven states traversed by the railroads are also marked in high relief, each engraved with a unique guilloché pattern. Beneath the translucent enamel, reverse engravings of the two engines add depth and detail.
The pen's gripping section is engraved with the start (January 8, 1863) and finish (May 10, 1869) dates of the railroad's construction, along with the inscription from the original Golden Spike: “May God continue the unity of our Country as this Railroad unites the two great Oceans of the world.”
