The Pelikan M1000 is a true wonder. Everything about this pen is absolutely exquisite. Already looking into my next M1000 model to add to my collection.

As a pen collector the Pelikan M1000 had been one of those grail pens that I have always wanted for my collection. Its classical looks, gold trim and elegant clip quietly understate its position now as one of the best pens that I own. I was expecting to be impressed after owning an m600 and I have not been disappointed. To begin with the nib which is beautiful to look at glides across the page with very little pressure and makes any writing a pleasure. The filling mechanism works extremely well and the balance of the pen posted or unposted just delivers. Once you have written with this pen you realise how impressive the experience is. I understand now how this pen gets its deserved reputation.

Pelikan M1000 is a true flex writer

The M1000 is a true holy grail pen. If you are a fountain enthusiast, you should definitely consider having this in your collection. They are incredibly reliable and wet writers. But please note that the Fine nib writes like a Broad nib in any other fountain pen, even for the Pelikan M800 models, so order accordingly. If you enjoy writing with a substantially-sized pen, this is an ideal pen, a perfect pen really. I would place the M100 in the same league as the Montblanc 149, the Sailor King of Pen, the Pilot Custom Urushi, and the Scribo Feel as among the truly grail pens that you can own. For these aforementioned pens, you are paying for quality of materials and function and not for ornamental aesthetics.

Pelikan M1000 (Fine)

I am a big fan of all models in the Pelikan Souveran range as each fountain pen has something unique to offer in terms of looks, poise, portability, and nib characteristics.

With the M1000, I find the weight and girth conducive to long and fatigue-free writing sessions. The black barrel comes with a green ink window that is understated and, to me, preferable to the new green barrel with the regrettably opaque stripes.

But, of course, what's truly outstanding about the M1000 is its nib. It's a wonderfully wet writer, and if you write with a light touch and on the right type of paper, the Fine nib can serve as a daily writer.

One day, I might have the nib re-ground to something finer, but for now I'm excited to be trying different inks and appreciating the subtleties this nib can produce.

My Daily Writer

Short version: I love this pen and use it every day.

The M1000 had been on my radar for a long time. The size, filling system and oversized nib really appealed to me. And I'm happy to say I have not been disappointed. I was looking for a pen to use daily for journaling and longform writing and this pen immediately bypassed my previous choices (Visconti Homo Sapiens, Sailor King of Pen and Wahl-Eversharp Decoband). For me the grip section and barrel are perfect for long writing sessions, and the nib is simply a joy to write with. One thing: I'm really happy I got the extra fine nib. I knew through reviews that the Pelikan nibs write wider and wetter than other nibs, and my comparison shows the Pelikan M1000 ef nib is about the same as the Sailor Pro Gear Standard broad nib.

Flawless out of the box

The pen lives up to the hype. The piston is extremely smooth and achieves an excellent fill. The nib is a delight to write with, and wrote great out of the box without any adjustment, The nib width was exactly as expected, While not a true flex pen, it has a delightful softness and can add line variation with ZERO railroading. This pen is perfect.

Beautiful soft writer

I ordered this pen with slightly apprehension because I had read about how it was a very different writing experience compared to the M800. While the M800 is a stiff reliable writer, the M1000 was a completely different nib, being extremely bouncy and almost like writing with a brush. Highly recommend.

I purchased with B nib. Appelboom has fine-tuned the nib. It writes very smooth with little bit of smart feedback. Ergonomically designed. I always love writing with this pen.

Maybe the grail pen doest exist after all?

  • Review Add on: 25-03-2021

I have been collecting fountain pens since Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon.
I can safely say that my collection is rather impressive. The quest itself is the grail and therefore we will never stop buying pens, which is good news for Joost Appelboom and colleagues.
Is the M1000 then the grail pen? Hopefully not, because it would end the quest.
All its excellent qualities have already been mentioned in the other reviews here. Mine has a broad nib and it surfs over the paper with flex and an unrivalled smoothness, being very generous with ink. Despite this impressive flow, bright blue ink stays blue, not black. I really love shining blue ink. If I were allowed to take just one pen into the afterlife it would be the Pelikan M1000 with regrets for having to leave the faithful Lamy 2000 behind (and of course many, if not all, other pens)...
