The Pilot Custom Urushi is an exceptional fountain pen. It is made from ebonite and coated with urushi lacquer.

It has a large 18 carat gold nib (size n°30) which provides a unique writing experience.

The Pilot Custom Urushi uses a cartridge/converter filling system.

The first Pilot pens were launched in Japan in 1918. At this time, the country was opening up to Western influences and was importing European techniques. Over the years, Pilot has developed into one of the leading fountain pen brands. For someone with large hands, the size of this pen is very comfortable and does not cause as much fatigue as smaller pens. It writes smoothly; the nib is very large and beautiful, plus being soft and bouncy for writing. The pen is beautiful with a classy style, and the Prussian Blue color is gorgeous. Very happy with this pen!

I'm 75. I do not rate myself as a "collector" but over the years I have accumulated a total of 20 fountain pens. This Custom Urushi (research that term if you are not familiar with it) is my most recent purchase. The phrase, "you get what you pay for"
applies. It is top quality. I ordered the MF nib and (for me) it is perfect. Not every supplier that I use had this pen in the Prussian Blue color. Appleboom did. Take advantage of their free nib inspection prior to shipping by a nib expert. You will not be disappointed.

The #30 nib on this Pilot Custom Urushi is, perhaps, the best in the lineup. Great flow, just a little springy to allow for a touch of line variation, and smooth but with some nice feedback. The blue urushi is gorgeous, a bit darker than some photos, and an excellent alternative to the black and red available with this and other models. In addition, this was my first purchase from Appelboom and it was a great experience. Love having the option to have them tune and smooth for me as who hasn't gotten burned with a skipping or slow-starting pen right out of the box? This is already one of my favorites--thanks!

The biggest nib of Pilot (not Namiki) - no. 30. The nib is wonderful, smooth and soft. The broad is a bit of a stub, I put Iroshizuku Shin Kai and it's juicy enough for shading.

Pilot has another home run on their hands. Pilot has created an Usushi fountain pen masterpiece in a shade of indigo blue that draws your attention and holds it. I could sit and stare at this beauty for hours, but it is in writing with this pen that you appreciate how close Pilot has come to creating a perfect writing experience. I chose the Medium Fine nib and was really impressed with its thin line width and how smoothly it rolled across the page. Normally when I get a new pen I do a short writing sample of a couple of sentences but with this pen I was happily writing a half page later as my Pilot Custom Urushi in Blue felt like an old friend. Well done Pilot and many thanks to Appelboom for delivering this wonder to me so soon after it’s release.
