The cap features a finely engraved representation of the Rosetta Stone, whose inscriptions in hieroglyphics, Demotic script and Classical Greek played a crucial role in the deciphering of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.

Further references to ancient Egyptian civilisation appear throughout the design, including hieroglyphs, the Sphinx, pyramids and the god Thoth. In ancient Egyptian culture, Thoth was among other things associated with writing and knowledge.

The barrel pays tribute to classical Greek philosophy. It features Classical Greek characters together with a detailed representation of Raphael’s celebrated painting ‘The School of Athens’, depicting such renowned thinkers as Plato, Aristotle and Pythagoras.

Surrounding these figures are numerous characters and writing forms inspired by the remarkable diversity of alphabets and writing systems represented by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
