Danitrio Mikado Shu Roiro-Migaki (Red) Fountain Pen Pre-owned

A particularly beautiful Danitrio Hyotan, finished in Aka Tame-nuri Urushi. This pen dates from the original Danitrio period, circa 2018/2019, and is a fine example of traditional Japanese Urushi craftsmanship.

The Aka finish, meaning red in Japanese, has a warm reddish-brown appearance. The Tame-nuri technique gives the Urushi lacquer remarkable depth and layering. By applying and carefully polishing transparent layers of Urushi, a lively surface is created in which the underlying layers remain visible. Urushi is also known for subtly developing its colour and character over time.

The Hyotan series takes its inspiration from the Japanese gourd (Hyotan), whose distinctive shape resembles an hourglass. Among Danitrio collectors, this shape is also known as the “Mae West”, referring to the famous American actress known for her iconic hourglass figure.

The pen is fitted with a #6 Medium nib and uses an eyedropper filling system. Measuring an impressive 147 mm when capped, this is a substantial and highly distinctive fountain pen.
