An exceptionally beautiful and highly collectible Danitrio Fellowship Maki-e fountain pen, specially created for the Fountain Pen Network (FPN). Dating from the original Danitrio period, circa 2018/2019, this pen is a fine example of traditional Japanese Urushi and Maki-e craftsmanship.

The design is inspired by the transient beauty of autumn and the poetry of the Japanese poet Matsuo Bashō. Deep burgundy Urushi provides the background for delicately rendered maple leaves in shades of crimson, gold and amber. Each leaf is executed with meticulous Maki-e detail. Near the bottom of the pen, a subtle raden inlay depicting an autumn flower adds a restrained touch of brilliance.

Traditional straw sandals are depicted on the barrel, referring to Bashō's many journeys and the transient nature of life. Together, these elements create a refined and atmospheric composition.

The pen was part of the Danitrio Fellowship edition, a special edition originally created for the Fountain Pen Network. The design is accompanied by the haiku:

Hamaguri no
Futami ni Wakare
Yuku Aki zo

Translated into English by Hiroaki Sato as: “A clam separates lid from flesh as autumn departs.”

The pen is made in the Sho-Hakkaku shape, a distinctive octagonal form within the Danitrio collection. It is fitted with an 18-karat two-tone #6 gold nib, also known among collectors as the “Fireball nib.” The decoration on the nib refers to the flame-shaped aureole of Fudo Myoo (Acala), an important figure in Japanese Buddhist art.
