The new Van Gogh-inspired release is Oiran, a collection that pays tribute to the Japanese-influenced homonymous painting (1887), which is also known as Courtesan. In fact, the artist painted it during his Japonisme period, a term that indicates the attraction and interest of French painters of the time towards the art of the Rising Sun.
Van Gogh based this painting on a woodcut by the Japanese artist Kesai Eisen. The print had been reproduced on the cover of the magazine Paris illustré in 1886. Van Gogh used a grid to copy and enlarge the Japanese figure. He used bright colours and bold outlines, as if it were a woodcut.
The pen, in its nuances, reproduces some of the colours used by Van Gogh. The metal coating in yellow gold is a perfect match. The kit from the Van Gogh 2022 collection also pays homage to the painting, which depicts a highborn courtesan.
One cannot study Japanese art without becoming much happier and more cheerful.
