In the year 1929 Pelikan was the first company in the world to introduce the differentiated piston mechanism. This technique causes the spindle inside the fountain pen to turn quicker than the end piece of the barrel, with the help of two different threads. To this date, this fountain pen exists in many different variations, and though it has been developed in design and technical details over time, the basic mechanism remains the same.

Well as a Pelikan fan I am maybe not objective I love this pen. I have it with a fine nib and one of the smoothest and wet nib I have. I love the color combo even though my pen is slightly pale compare to the picture but a tiny difference.

What a beautiful pen! I’ve been wanting to add a Pelikan Souverän to my collection for some time and the lovely Silver-White M405 it is. Pelikan’s dedication to craftsmanship shows in every detail of the manufacture of the pen. The M405 is a perfect size for writers with a smaller hand, though there is no skimping on the perfection of details compared to this pen’s larger siblings the M600s – M1000s. I added the optional nib tuning and smoothing service to my order and can confirm that Appelboom’s in-house nibmeister had the nib writing butter-smooth from the first inking. Appelboom’s dedication to customer service is A-1 with my shipment arriving safely, carefully and festively packaged.

The silver/white Souveran M405 is very lovely and writes beautifully! I also ordered the Moonstone ink to go with it, but my pen is a fine nib and I don’t think that was the best color/nib combination. I can’t praise Appelboom’s care and service highly enough! My order was securely packaged and arrived within a week, even after requesting nib tuning. I will certainly buy from Appelboom again, when I can reach for an M600! 🙂
