In 1858, Jean-Baptiste Bichelberger chose the small town of Etival-Clairefontaine to set up his paper mill. Taking advantage of the rags supplied by the local textile industry, Clairefontaine grew to become one of the most important factories in the industry.
Clairefontaine began to manufacture their famous stationery products in 1890. Clairefontaine is currently the only European manufacturer making its own paper for its own products. This guarantees not only consistent product quality, but also controls the environmental impact of the manufacturing process. Clairefontaine is now managed by sixth generation family members.

This is good quality paper. Personally I love Rhodia pads because of how they show off sheen and shading for fountain pen inks and these good a good job at it too. A5 is 5.8″x8.3 inches (like the standard American size 8.5″x11″, but halfed on the long side, ‘hamburger’ fold if you will). If you have never tried Triomphe paper, I recommend buying it; it’s different than the standard Clairefontaine paper.

The Clairefontaine Triomphe Notepad paper has a silky texture that feels amazingly smooth. The paper is 90gsm but doesn’t feel that heavy to me.
I have tested the paper against Gels, Rollerballs, Ballpoint, and Fountain Pens among others. Most every pen required some amount of dry time except the EnerGel, Sarasa, JetStream and Signo DX. My fountain pens and a Bic Z4 were the wettest on the paper. Nothing bled and there is no show through for any pen but, I do see impressions of my thinner tipped gels and ballpoints on the opposite side of the page.
Most every pen I tested looked great on the paper. The only exceptions were the Pilot Hi-Tech C .25mm and a Sakura Gellyroll florescent orange. Both seem faded next to the other pens.
Overall I really like this paper.
