Montblanc Patron of Art 4810 Scipione Borghese Fountain pen 115973

The Montblanc Patron of Art 2017 is dedicated to Scipione Borghese (1577-1633). Borghese was an Italian Cardinal and considered to be one of the greatest and most influential lovers, patrons and collectors of Roman baroque art. During his lifetime, Carindal Scipione Borghese was seen as an especially adept patron of culture. He was particularly fond of two young artists, both of whom went on to achieve great fame: the sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini and the painter Caravaggio. Borghese commissioned Gian Lorenzo Bernini to create numerous sculptures, including two portrait busts of the cardinal himself. Carviaggo likewise a protégé of Borghese at the time, took completely new paths in painting. His combination of sacred motifs depicted with everyday scenes was an innovation that was to shape the art of painting for centuries.

The works of Bernini and Caravaggio formed the initial inventory for the Galleria Borghese, which was founded by Scipione Borghese himself. With confident feeling for milestones in art, he enriched his collection with masterpieces from Titian, Raphael and other significant artists of the Renaissance. Most famous worldwide is the Borghese Vase. Richly decorated with sculptural embellishments, Borghese displayed it on the gallery’s ground floor, and today it is one of the highlights of the Louvre.

The Montblanc Patron of Art Homage to Scipione Borghese Limited Edition honours this grand art patron with various design details. The inspiration for the granite barrel of the Montblanc Patron of Art Borghese 4810 Limited Edition is the multi-coloured marble floor in the Galleria Borghese. The ornaments and pattern of embossing on the cap and around the cone of this edition dons antique motifs seen on the Borghese Vase. The design of the clip is inspired by the park at Villa Borghese. The artistically crafted clip, crowned by a smoky quartz, brings to mind the branches of the colossal old trees of this extraordinary park. The shape of the cap top, crowned with the Montblanc emblem of black and white precious resin, is reminiscent of a cardinal’s hat, while the cone top, made of carnelian on the Montblanc Patron of Art Borghese 4810 Limited Edition, is adorned with a portrait of Borghese. The 18kt gold nib is enriched with an engraving of the Borghese family coat of arms.

Restricted to 4810 pieces, representing the height of the Mont Blanc mountain in metres, the Patron of Art Limited Edition 4810 fountain pen is now available.
